Schools of Enrollment Spotlight Series - McIntire School of Commerce (McIntire/Comm School)

1. Can you briefly introduce yourself and your role within the school?

McIntire Undergraduate Admission Office.

2. What makes this program unique compared to similar programs at other institutions?

McIntire's B.S. in Commerce stands out for combining a strong liberal arts foundation with a rigorous business education. Students explore a wide range of academic interests, which allows them to bring diverse perspectives into the classroom and their future careers. The integrated curriculum emphasizes collaboration, communication, analytical thinking, and real-world problem solving across various business disciplines, rather than teaching subjects in isolation.

3. How would you describe the program's culture and learning environment?

McIntire is known for being collaborative, engaging, and student-centered. While students are highly motivated and ambitious, the culture is much more team-oriented than many people expect. Group projects, case studies, and experiential learning opportunities are central to the curriculum, creating an environment in which students learn from each other as much as from faculty. The community is supportive and welcoming, with faculty, staff, and peers committed to helping students succeed academically, professionally, and personally. Students benefit from a close-knit experience while also having access to all the resources and opportunities available through UVA.

4. What types of students tend to thrive in this program?

Students who thrive at McIntire are intellectually curious, adaptable, and eager to engage both inside and outside the classroom. Successful students are often strong collaborators who enjoy working with diverse teams and are willing to challenge themselves through experiential learning opportunities. While academic preparation is important, there is no single "McIntire student" profile. Students with a variety of backgrounds, interests, and career goals find success in the program. Those who take initiative, seek out opportunities, and embrace collaboration tend to make the most of their McIntire experience.

5. What are some common misconceptions prospective transfer students have about the program?

One common misconception lately is the program's timing. The B.S. in Commerce degree is a three-year (six-semester) curricular format. All transfer applicants enter as second-year (sophomore) students, regardless of the number of college credits earned prior to transfer. Applicants currently in their first or second year at another institution are welcome to apply; however, completion of the program requires six semesters of full-time study at McIntire. Students are not able to accelerate the program to graduate in fewer than six semesters.

6. What is one thing you wish transfer students knew about your school before they started?

The transition can feel daunting at first, but students who actively engage with the available opportunities often discover a strong sense of belonging sooner than they expected and find their place within the McIntire community.

7. What is your go-to Bodo's order, and where on Grounds would you eat it?

Depends on whether we’re ordering breakfast or lunch. One of our favorites is smoked turkey, feta spread, and cucumbers on an everything bagel.
