Preparing for the fall semester

Well, technically, it's still July, but here in the office we are already talking heavily about the fall. We hope you're enjoying the last few weeks of summer. As you prepare to return to school (or maybe this is your first semester of college), it's important to be aware of the pre-requisite courses necessary for transfer to UVa. We realize there are courses you'll need to take at your institution, but it's important to overlap, or incorporate what we're looking for as well.

If you go to our website at http://www.admission.virginia.edu/transfer and click on "Transfer Course Requirements" on the left-hand side, you'll see some very helpful introductory information.  Once you click through to each school -- the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Architecture, etc -- you'll see a list of exactly what you need to take.  Follow this closely.  If you would like to see how your schools courses might transfer, you can use our transfer credit analyzer.  This will show most of your institutions and many courses.  Do not fret if courses you have taken do not appear on the analyzer.  It doesn't necessarily mean that they won't transfer, but our registrars will evaluate the credit once you've paid your deposit.

Again, enjoy the rest of your summer.  The next time we write, the Common App will be up and going (opens August 1) for those of you applying for spring admission.

Hello,

I participated in Leadership on the Lawn in 2013, is this something I should put on my application as an activity?

Hi,

If we are applying for the spring transfer, when should we send in our Mid-term reports? Also, my dean is writing a letter of recommendation for me. Would it be better to have two professors or a professor and my advisor to write the remaining two letters of rec?

Hello Aaron,
Yes, you can mention it on your application. While it won't make a huge impact, it would be nice for us to see it.

Lea,
If you choose to send a mid-term report, wait until after you received grades from mid-term exams or papers. This should be the halfway point in the semester. Remember that recommendations are not required for transfer admission. If you want, recommendations from a professor and your dean would be sufficient.
