Are you on the Wait List?

You can use this post as a space to make comments or ask questions about the wait list.
If you are interested in staying on the wait list, please make sure you click the button labeled “remain on the wait list.”  If you don’t do this, we will not review your file again in the future. Once you’ve clicked it, that does the trick.  This page stays the same after you click the button in case you change your mind at a later date. If you do end up changing your mind and want to leave the waiting list, please come back and decline the spot.
Admitted students have until May 15th to make their decisions. After this deadline passes, we will begin to look to see how many students we can take off the wait list.  These numbers vary from year to year and unfortunately, it can be a long process. We won’t make any decisions on May 16th.  There is a bit of a wait. Why? Because we have to wait for your final exams to end, and for you to send us updated grades. We hope to make our decisions by the end of June however. Offers are usually made in waves meaning we'll reach out one or two times.
How do we make these decisions?  We absolutely need to see your transcripts listing your spring 2018 grades.  In short, send us your final transcript. Trust us. If you want us to look at your file again, send it along.  You’ll want to do this, but only after your exams are completed and ALL of your grades are posted.  To send this transcript, please use the same address that appears on the right panel of this blog. Ideally, you would want to get these to us by the first week of June, but there is still time after that period. We know there can be extenuating circumstances. If you were not taking classes this spring, feel free to send a note/email/letter of continued interest to undergradadmission@virginia.edu. It will get to the transfer committee, so you do not need to put it to anyone’s attention. Please do not send us additional essays or recommendations.
If your grades are strong, this may help you earn the offer, but we can’t offer to everyone from the wait list, so we’ll be looking at the strongest candidates.  If you earned poor grades this past spring, it would be difficult for us to admit you.
Our wait lists are divided by school – Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Batten, Commerce, Kinesiology.  So, you are only on a wait list for that particular program.  It is not ranked, and it is only made up of students who elected to remain on the wait list.  That’s why we can’t give a firm number of right now.  Historically, about 20% of the applicants are offered a spot on the wait list, but not everyone elects to stay on it.
If you are eventually offered admission from the wait list and need financial aid information in order to make your decision, we will do our best to help you with this.  If you post here, please be considerate of each other’s feelings, emotions, reactions and the like. We will delete any inappropriate commentary. Good luck all!

Is it possible to view which spot you are on the waitlist. Thank you.

Hey Transfermer,
So I got put on the waitlist and I understand that spring semester grades matter now. I took all engineering classes and one general ed so my course load isn't particularly easy. The reason I'm mentioning this is that my grades this semester are too good and I will most likely end with all Bs and B+s in my engineering classes and an A in my gen ed class due to my close grandma passing away. It took a toll on me and it was really hard for me to focus in my classes. Is there anyway I can supply this information to you guys? (i.e. email or letter)

AxeCapital said...

@aps17 the list is not ranked.

Transfermer,

I'm on the wait list and intend to send my final transcript by May 12, which is when my final grades will be in (looking great so far!). I was just honored a with a campus wide student award that came in certificate form and I was wondering; can I scan this and include it in my update email once final grades are in? Also, I expect my final grades to be perfect - but withdrew from one non-relevant elective becuase it turns out ***I did not need to take to get my associate's from NOVA***. Will this be a red flag? I only withdrew because **it would not transfer.**

Also: You say we will hear back once or twice regarding waitlists, is it rolling? Assuming all my credentials are in by May 12, can I expect to hear back before June in any way possible? Or will it be a set date we receive an update email?

Thank you,

Hi, I meant *aren't too good, not too good. Sorry.

Transfermer,

When it is said that only the top students on the waitlist are accepted - what does that mean? I was told that just the top students in the waitlist are accepted (i.e. those with 3.7+'s).

In that case, would having a 3.5 GPA but a 4.0 midterm report be useless? Is the reconsideration holistic or really just a cream of the crop picking?

Thanks

If I received a new campus honor/award, how can I update UVA? Also, will waitlist decisions be rolling or in waves?

@Adrian Frunz - When I was updating my application - I had to do this twice because of a similar situation to yours - I sent the supplement via e-mail directly to the office of admissions and included my UVA CID / common app ID so that they could easily match it to my application. I assume this process would be the same for your situation. Hope this helps.

Dear Transfermer,
I applied to UVA under the GAA agreement, but I was waitlisted. I applied with a 3.4 GPA and this GPA from my college did NOT include the D that I got on a STAT class since I retook it and got a B. Even though I retook this class and this class was not one of the required classes for the GAA agreement, did having a D in the first place disqualify me from transferring under the GAA? Or was it only the fact that computing this low grade and the B into an average versus dropping the lowest one caused my GPA to be below a 3.4? I have really strong grades this semester and have finished two of my 6 classes and have already increased it to a 3.5

Was talking to some of my friends and some applicants who've been through the wait-list process. While the Dean is adamant that the process is holistic, the applicants claim that they all got off the waitlist because of their near perfect grades. I have 5 friends who were all wait listed for CAS and they all got off with 4.0s

AxeCapital said...

@MARKXZ When you say 4.0, do you mean their cumulative GPA was a 4.0, or they sent in a 4.0 report on their final spring grades?

Transfermer said...

Hi folks,
We are finally coming up for air after the wave of phone calls and emails that come after decisions are released. We'll be back this afternoon or evening to answer your questions.

Transfermer said...

SEAS Transfer Prospect,
You can write to us at undergradadmission@virginia.edu with this information. I am sorry for your loss.

AxeCapital,
-Yes, you can email the scan of the certificate
-You should include why you withdrew from the course in this email.
-It is somewhat like a rolling process, but chances are, we will only make offers once, or twice. No, we won’t begin to make offers until June.

Markxz and AxeCapital,
We are sorry you didn’t get the decision were expecting, but happy that you are still under consideration. Remember that this is a selective process. One does not get admitted simply by submitting documents. Are you saying that your school year ends at the beginning of April? If that’s the case, and you won’t be sending any grades in May or early June, please email us and let us know.
The admissions process in general is holistic. We do not require a 4.0 in the spring from our wait listed students. Let’s all take a deep breath. First, we are looking to see if there is space to admit students from the wait list. We are also looking to see if you took the right coursework. Are your grades trending in a positive direction? Have you showed us that you are prepared for the rigor of the coursework that you’ll find at UVA? These are questions that we ask when we look what will hopefully be a critical mass of transcripts throughout June. Clearly, students with the strongest grades will have a better chance, but we have to take other semesters and high school work into account. We do not require or expect everyone to have a 4.0.

GoldmanSak,
Hopefully, my note above will answer this question.

AdrianFrunz,
Yes, just as MegC says.

Morgan_Wier,
If you are applying under the Arts and Sciences GAA, the D takes you out of the running. It’s one shot and you’re out. If you are applying under the Engineering GAA and the D was at a non-VCCS school, you could still qualify. Sometimes, we just want to see that you can keep good grades through the spring semester.

Markxz said...

@AxeCapital they sent in straight As for their spring grades on the final transcript. They also already had a very high GPA over all

AxeCapital said...

Transfermer, I saw that the #UVA22 yield was particularly high and that little to no waitlist movement is expected for the incoming 1st years (according to the UVA UG admissions twitter). Does this also relate to the transfer waitlist? ...

Markxz said...

@AxeCapital dude you literally answered your own question. If the #UVA22 yield for freshman was higher than expected, admissions automatically adjusted and are now not taking many off the waitlist. They've already accommodated for the larger yield and thus we should not be affected by it.

Transfermer said...

AxeCapital,
These are different applicant pools and wait lists.

AxeCapital said...

@markxz I was just getting a credible answer before making any assumptions

AxeCapital said...

Transfermer,

Last year the blog stayed relatively quiet after initial decisions went out. Can we expect an update in mid-late may with waitlist/open spot numbers this year?

Thanks!

Jordan said...

How we send new info...to the email address above? Also, do we send new transcripts through the common app? Thank you!

AxeCapital said...

@Jordan Ycan send updates to undergradadmission@virginia.edu. That's where I submitted my letter of continued interest and I received confirmation that it was added to my file.

Also, how did you send your transcript initially? You would do it the same way you submitted before; I used an online service called Parchment to send my transcript and plan to do that again later this week to send final grades.

Transfermer said...

AxeCapital,
When we have news, we will share it on the blog.

Jordan,
Follow Axe's lead on sending pertinent updates. Please order your transcript the same way you did it ahead of the May 1 deadline. Typically, this involves contacting your registrar's office and they will either send it via e-script (through a third party like Parchment), or through the mail.

Jordan said...

Thank you so much! AxeCapital, good luck to you!

AxeCapital said...

@jordan to you as well, man!

Markxz said...

Hey Transfermer. I was just wondering how much stock is put into the letter that may be sent to admissions by those on the waitlist? I'm not sure whether to write one or not.

GoldmanSak said...

First year waitlist just closed and the deposit deadline for regularly accepted transfers is today.. hopefully we get an update soon! Hopeful for a bigger pool of room vs. some of the previous years..

Markxz said...

I believe the transfer wait list has been consistent over the years and fluctuates between 80-100 spots. Hopeful for an acceptance to CAS!

Unknown said...

Dear Transfermer,

In addition to final spring 2018 grades, is the rigor of courses taken considered while evaluating students on the waitlist?
For example, if two candidates both get a 3.8 GPA, would the difference in their courses count as a deciding factor?

Unknown said...

When will the next wave of waitlist calls begin?

GoldmanSak said...

@Clara

@Clara

Next? They haven't begun on the transfer waitlist yet, or just started since the deposit deadline for regular transfers just ended. They also just closed the first year waitlist so I think we can expect an update from Transfermer within the next week or two.. It takes them a little bit to process all of their deposits and get numbers of open spots for the waitlist.

Transfermer said...

**Doing this a little out of order so that we can nip something in the bud**
Clara,
GoldmanSak is correct. We have not made any transfer offers from the wait list. We made a small handful of offers from the FIRST-YEAR wait list, so this may be what you were reading. Currently, we are working though originally admitted transfers who required additional time for financial aid awards. The dust has not yet settled. When it does, we’ll let you know how many students we plan to offer to from the wait list. Expect an update from us in early June.

Markxz,
We cannot quantify how much a letter/note/email matters. Across the board, for everyone, it is the final grades that matter the most.

Malika,
That is a valid question, but we don’t compare students in that way because you all are at many different stages in college, or have different high school records. We will make the best decisions for the class at large.

Unknown said...

Hello!

If I took a few credits at UVA this past spring, would I still need to send an official transcript for these classes? Would it be accessible through SIS-- or maybe I can send the transcript online?

Hope all is well! Thanks so much for all the help.

Unknown said...

Hi Transfermer,

I was waitlisted for engineering. I got a 4.0 this semester, but I did drop a course because I wasn't able to get into the lab. Knowing I would be transferring to some school (if not UVA), I decided my time would be better spent focusing on my other courses and using the time to put in some extra hours at work since the course was non-transferable without the lab. Now I'm worried I may have made a mistake dropping, but I don't want to seem to be making excuses. I already sent in my transcript - should I write a letter of explanation?

GoldmanSak said...

Could be any day now...

Markxz said...

I'm pretty sure the first wave will be June 8th. The 2nd wave maybe before June 15th. Then most of the offers should be sent out by then and up until July once they officially close the waitlist, might be some minor movement. Super excited as i applied to CAS with top grades!

GoldmanSak said...

Got into GW. All I know is if I get pulled off the waitlist I am immediately going to deposit UVA.

Markxz said...

Should be any day now but I'm expecting June 8th which is a Friday. Hoping our 4.0s last semester pull through for us. Many people in CC got off the waitlist with a 4.0 so I'm hopeful. It seems like a cream of the crop picking here.

GoldmanSak said...

I hope so as well. Ended up getting a 3.8 for the semester, got one B...

Markxz, i think your June 8 estimate might be a little too early. From past years it looks like there wasn't movement until June 15-18.

Markxz said...

Markxz said...

Yea you're probably right. I don't think the wave will happen this week.

GoldmanSak said...

pls update am dying of anxiety and uncertainty

Markxz said...

I don't think an update will happen. They didn't do one last year. I guess we'll just have to wait for a wave next week.

Unknown said...

FYI, I just checked my SIS and my status updated. :) Applied to SEAS, in case it makes a difference.

Thanks so much for everything, Transfermer— all the help despite this busy time is greatly appreciated!

Unknown said...

Updated as in you were accepted from off the waiting list?

Unknown said...

Yup! I’m so sorry if it was vague— probably should’ve said it from the get-go.

GoldmanSak said...

Congratulations Julianna! So happy for you!!

Transfermer!! WE need an update for CAS!!

Unknown said...

wow, congrats! Did you get an email or did you just notice your portal updated?

Unknown said...

I randomly checked my SIS, and it said I had a future due balance of $400.00– so I went snooping around (checked my application status) because I was pretty sure I didn’t sign up for classes. It was a great surprise!

Unknown said...

Also, thank you so much! Hope all goes well for everyone else. :D

Markxz said...

We need an update for CAS please! I'm pretty sure it was just SEAS today. CAS traditionally had been 2nd to 3rd week of June

Unknown said...

Markxz, I don't think any waves have gone out yet, for SEAS, or otherwise... Don't think you'll be getting an update today, either. It's already 5pm in VA. lol.

Markxz said...

I'm not sure why she was taken off the waitlist then. They usually do it in waves and if you go back to the 2016 wait list blog you'll see that SEAS students got notified before the big CAS wave the following week. But of course Transfermer did mention on the blog post that the big wave was for CAS and SEAS which usually happens around June 13-17

Unknown said...

I was expecting it later in the month as well, but I guess it came earlier...? Either way, best of luck and thank you to everyone!

Unknown said...

If it helps any, I applied as a second year.

Unknown said...

Mark, all we can really do is speculate, but if you look at past years usually a few people are accepted before the wave goes out, which has always been on a Friday, not a thursday, as you previously mentioned. They also are supposed to send an email out notifying of a decision, since there is only a 2-day accept/reject period

GoldmanSak said...

Red, the email always comes a few hours later (according to previous years - i have read every single waitlist related comment from the past 8 years sadly haha). I also have seen SEAS individuals getting decisions before the normal waves so this seems pretty in line with what has happened in the past.

Let the decision anxiety begin again!!!1!

Markxz said...

Alright that makes more sense actually. They would definitely notify us through a post if it was a wave. Just over reacted lol

GoldmanSak said...

ACCCEPTED TO CAS ECON OMG OASDFJAKL;SDFJADS;LF

Markxz said...

I don't understand what is going on right now. Are they just taking off a couple people before a big wave? I'm CAS and don't see anything

Unknown said...

Congratulations Juliana and GoldmanSak!
Sooo hoping for good news for the rest of us!
