Q&A for Waitlisted Students

Hello, waitlisted Fall 2026 transfer students – this is for you.

Every year we have students with questions about the process for the waitlist.  We wanted to share some questions and proactive answers with you to help provide some guidance.

What does it mean to receive a decision of wait list?
Each year, we get applications from more exceptional students than we have the space to enroll. We extend the number of admission offers that we believe will fill the space available – but, predicting what college students will choose to do can be a difficult endeavor. The decision of waitlist is offering the opportunity to be considered from the waiting list if we have space to make additional offers.

For waitlisted students, what factors is the committee still considering?
At this point, we have all of the information that we need from you; what we don’t know yet is how many offers we would be able to make. We will need your final semester grades once they are available, but otherwise the committee will look at the full application holistically, as it does throughout the review, in the waiting list process.

How many students have been admitted from the waiting list historically?  For each of the schools?
Unfortunately, we don’t have individualized data broken up by school and program, but we can share that previous years are not necessarily helpful in predicting future years. This is especially true for the many different schools of enrollment in the transfer process, where application numbers can fluctuate from year to year depending on the program. If you’re interested in being considered from the waiting list, you should opt-in via your applicant portal. You should get excited about your other options. And, if we are able to be in touch with you with good news, we will.

When and how will I hear about waiting list decisions?
We will reach out to you via the contact information you provided as part of your application. Any waiting list offers we are able to make for transfers don’t typically happen until mid-June, but please keep an eye on the email address and phone number you submitted as part of your application. We will notify everyone that the waiting list is closed when we are no longer able to make offers.

We hope this is some helpful information for you to consider in your next steps.

Today is the Day – Decision Release Day for Fall 2026 Transfer Admission

Hello, Future Possible Hoos! πŸ‘‹

You've completed all the hard work - applications, transcript requests, writing statements, and waiting. Let’s not forget to acknowledge the strength it takes to wait. *Pat yourselves on the backs.*  But the day is here - by this evening, around 5 p.m., our tech team will run a few processes and decisions will be released. Emails will go out to notify you to log into your application portal for an update, where your decision will be available.πŸ“¨

Let me share the three possible outcomes: admitted, waitlisted, or denied. Every year, we receive more qualified applications than ever before, representing more students than we have space to admit. This is not an easy process, and it is not one we take lightly. We know there are people, stories, lives, and goals attached to all of these documents, and we strive to honor that in our review process. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your educational journey.πŸ“šπŸ—Ί️

For admitted students: Congratulations! We are excited for you and look forward to welcoming you to Grounds. We hope to see you at upcoming admitted student events over the next week or two. Please keep an eye on your checklist items and your email, as we will be asking you to complete tasks and register for informational opportunities.

For waitlisted students: If you are interested in remaining on the waitlist, there is a form for you to complete within your checklist items. It is also very important to keep your application as up to date as you would like should there be any movement in available spaces. Any waitlist movement depends on when we begin hearing from admitted students accepting or declining their offers. While I can’t commit to a specific date, this typically occurs around early June.

For denied students: We understand that this is likely not the outcome you were hoping for. Most students don’t apply expecting a denial. We are grateful that you considered us, and while this may be difficult to read right now, we know there is a great location for you to continue your educational journey. We wish you all the best!  If you are earlier in your educational journey and would like UVA to remain an option for future transfer cycles, please note that the transfer Common Application will open on August 1, 2026, for spring 2027 admission to the College of Arts and Sciences and fall 2027 admission to all UVA schools/the college that accept transfer students.

Please take time to process, celebrate, game plan.

We will share more in the coming days, including statistics (as they become available) and information about upcoming virtual admitted student sessions.

Thank you all!
