Similar to Dean J's approach, I have created posts for each of the decisions. Please be respectful of others' feelings and situations. I will delete comments if necessary.
Labeling this process as difficult would be an understatement. You all take a chance in applying to transfer and making the decision to apply to leave or move on from your university or college. We admire you for this and take our job very seriously. I hope you can appreciate our efforts and we commend you for yours.
Have a good weekend.
Waitlisted.....I would like to send a letter to express my strong interest in attending, but am unsure of who to send it to. I applied to the McIntire School of Commerce, but also indicated my desire to be considered for the College of Arts and Sciences if I were not accepted in to McIntire....do I send letters to each school? The Waitlist decision was always my worst fear....I still have a glimmer of hope, but another long wait to see if I can still get in....
ReplyDeletewhen will we hear back if we were wait-listed?
ReplyDeleteI was waitlisted... is there anything that can be done to increase my chances of getting off the waitlist...
ReplyDeleteWill any one provide an approximate number of individuals that are placed on the UVA transfer waiting lists? What is the acceptance rate from the list?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks
What should we do now? I don't want to wait on the waitlist and risk losing my place at another school if it turns out I don't get in at UVA AND I want to make sure I have a place to live next year! Don't get me wrong- I'm thankful to have been offered this much, I just don't know what to do next.
ReplyDeleteleslie-
ReplyDeleteyou're probably going to want to put down a deposit for your other school and if you get taken off the waitlist you'll get to come here but you'll lose your deposit.
I got in and im surprised tbh.
Are we legally obligated to attend UVa if we accept our place on the waitlist?
ReplyDeleteIt's basically like being rejected, except more noncommittal on their part.
ReplyDeleteThis is so stupid... I was waitlisted when I applied as a regular student too, and I actually thought it meant something back then. (Actually, the same thing happened to me with W&M, except they let me in transferring.)
I'll stop being angry and try to answer your questions as best I can.
Technically, they wait until they see your end-of-semester grades before they make a decision, but it's also (usually) based on how many people they admitted end up attending (all of my information goes for regular admission; transferring is probably very similar, but probably not exactly the same). If fewer admitted students decide to attend than they expect/make room for, they take people off the waitlist.
All of that said, it's very rare (with regular admission) that you'll get in anywhere you're on the waitlist. W&M said they hadn't gone to theirs in something like five years.
To wrap it up, in my experience, there is a *very* small chance you'll get in off of the waitlist, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you (I'm certainly not going to). I'm sorry if I broke any hearts, but this is my experience.
I hate that :(
ReplyDeletewaitlisted with 4.0 GPA
I hate this too...waitlisted with a 4.0GPA. But it doesn't really matter to me since I'm going to W&M!
ReplyDeleteI know they didn't want us to post credentials before, but I figure we can now.
ReplyDeleteWhat are peoples GPAs, SATs, school transferring from, in/out state status?
Hey Transfermer!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the decisions early, I wasn't looking forward to waiting the next few days. Will taking summer classes at UVA increase our chances of being accepted off of the wait list? I know that someone asked this earlier and it didn't matter for regular decision but I was hoping it might help out us wait listers. Thanks again!
What does it mean if your application is still in committee? I am assuming some committees finished while others did not?
ReplyDeleteThat would be the logical assumption my dear friend. I'm guessing they're done with a lot of the easy decisions, and those who haven't received notification either way are competitive (otherwise they would just waitlist). So take heart! We've got one shot in hell.
ReplyDeleteI'm bummed i was looking forward to walking around the lawn this time next year in the gorgeous weather... you should see me day dream walking around GMU where i work... (FYI theres a reason i don't want to go to GMU). Wait-List Here I Come.....
ReplyDeleteTO the person who keeps asking for credentials. STOP. If you hadn't noticed, there are people with 4.0 GPAs who didn't get in, and people with a 3.5 who did, so based on that, I'd say its pretty dumb to try and gauge your chances based on your grades. Just wait it out like everyone else who hasn't heard.
ReplyDeleteWhen will be notified if we are accepted off the waitlist? Will it be in June? Also, I know you cannot give an exact number but about how many are accepted off the wait list?
ReplyDeleteProbably never.
ReplyDeleteThat's why i asked about SATs, school, and out of state status, all of those are significant.
ReplyDeleteA 4.0 from Podunk U. isn't as good as 3.5 from say Virginia Tech.
Someone with a 1130 has far less of chance than someone with a 1320.
Someone from Virginia has a better chance than someone form Maryland.
The fact that you fail to recognize this goes to show you don't have a real grasp on what I'm talking about.
Well, my friend was on waitlist but he got accepted to UVA..so don't worry guys! Just wait a little bit more and see what happens! Good luck to everyone!
ReplyDeleteTransfermer,
ReplyDeleteHow many were accepted? How many were waitlisted? How many places are to be filled in the College, Commerce, etc.? What is the typical yield? This is the type of information we need tonight. Are you there?
Anonymous waitlisted unit No. 34598
If you got wait-listed at Comm school it is doubtful you will get in.
ReplyDeleteTransfermer
ReplyDeletewhen is the deposit due? just want to make sure whether I have enough time to send it when I'm done with my finals
Well, I went to a "po-dunk" university with less than a 4.0 and a 1750 (like a 1200 on the old one) on my SAT and, as an out of state student, got accepted to a school that is more selective than UVA with regards to OOS students.
ReplyDeleteSo this goes to show you that I actually do know what you're talking about.
You can keep trying to compare yourself to others that were immediately accepted, but you're just gonna drive yourself crazy dude.
LOL if its more selective then how did you not get into UVA?
ReplyDeleteAnd unless you're talking about Berkeley I disregard your opinion...
More selective for oos does not mean more selective overall
I also would like to send a letter. Where should I send it??
ReplyDeleteShould I send it to admission office? Also, could tou give us brief accepted student profile and last year's acceptance rate of wait-listed students?

ReplyDelete"If you got wait-listed at Comm school it is doubtful you will get in."
Thanks. Now I am really depressed.
It is a bit messed up but waitlist is ridiculous because it gives you a glimmer of hope when in reality it means you are rejected, youre just better than other kids who got rejected.
ReplyDeleteIts just good to know because it gives you more time to modify your plan and count on another path, do that and maybe youll get lucky. But its time to be practical.
well said anon !!!
ReplyDeleteI am still so disappointed - I've worked SO hard - just to be wait listed. It hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!
waitlisted :(
ReplyDeleteI don't see how they can waitlist students before making decisions on other applicants. I guess each committee has a certain target rate of admits, waitlists, and denials?
ReplyDeleteto Ryan
ReplyDeleteI know, I know.
I guess the wait list will get even bigger next week !
i can't wait to attend UVA as a freshman!
ReplyDeleteTransfermer/Dean J (or anyone that may know),
ReplyDeleteCan you provide us with some stats as to when we'll hear if we're accepted/denied off the waitlist? Also, I read that the freshman waitlist wasn't ranked, is the transfer one the same? Thank you!
I sure hope its ranked...
ReplyDeleteyeah me too cause i'm sick of all these people with 3.5 gpas getting in over my hard worked 4.0
ReplyDeleteThe people with 3.5s are probably the ones who dropped out of high school and already have kids...guess that's one way of thinking of 'diversity'. Instead of working hard, I should have done that.
ReplyDeleteNo offense, but having a 3.5 doesn't make you any less qualified than a 4.0 necessarily. Depending on where you're coming from and what you're studying. SAT's Essays, and ECs also matter quite a bit. I have between a 3.5 and a 4.0, and I resent that attitude. Especially if you're applying as a freshman, chances are you took all intro courses which are significantly easier to make good grades in.
ReplyDeleteWell, in response to the recent transfermer's post, I had a well balanced schedule: chemistry, biology, calculus, and two general education classes (philosophy and business). You can't really get any more diverse than that and I still earned a 4.0 GPA. So what gives... I'm more curious about why I didn't get in rather than actually going since I already secured a spot in another college.
ReplyDeletemaybe you're not coming from a very difficult school? or did not have ec? i don't know. that is surprising to me.
ReplyDeleteAlso hs grades are very important since you only had a semester in college, did that hurt you perhaps?
to anon who said
ReplyDelete"The people with 3.5s are probably the ones who dropped out of high school and already have kids...guess that's one way of thinking of 'diversity'. Instead of working hard, I should have done that."
I dont know what to tell you except I have a 3.5 at vt and i'm about to finish my first year of college right out of hs.
I think you're just bitter lets be honest here. that's such a generalization and shows that you're demeanor is definitely not what the university wants.
A 4.0 doesnt necessarily mean you worked harder than someone with a 3.5. Grades are just a number that you're given for your work and it can be subjective. you may think you deserve an A, but maybe your professor thinks otherwise.
to sum up, admissions did their job and you should just weigh in your options instead of making generalizations about people because you were given a decision you didn't like.
If you want to read my essays go ahead im sure there may be a difference there. mine arn't amazing but i worked pretty hard on them.
To anon and alex,
ReplyDeleteI came from the third ranked school of virginia, so it's not that. I am finishing my first year of college out of high school too. And I'm the anon. with the 5 courses above. I had excellent recommendations, one a teacher who went to UVa and another from a director of a dept. I partcipated in habitat for humanity, op. smile, special programs and I even wrote about them in my essays. Maybe you're right Alex that I'm a little bitter because to me it's quite peculiar why I was waitlisted and I was accepted to W&M and UofR.
Read the Newsweek or US News or whatever it is...theres an article in there that says basicly they have to believe you auditioning for a part if your not a good fit, you won't make it. Plain and clear, you maybe just weren't a good fit for the school. Find those magazines, read them, they will enlighten those of you who maybe resenting UVA for not accepting you or for putting you on the waitlist. If you'd like, i'll find someway to post them online if someone wants, they are probably the reason i was atleast Wait-listed...
ReplyDeleteP.S. i'm not resentful just because someone with a 3.4 or 3.5 got in, 3.5 IS THE AVERAGE GPA! That means AVERAGE(I.E. some below some above) also, its a VERY competitive school not everyone with a 3.5-4.0 can get in they just don't have room!
As a UVA graduate and the parent of a student who was outright turned down a few years ago, I think it is much kinder on the University's part for them to either accept or reject applicants. I have never heard of anyone getting in from a waitlist. It would seem much kinder and realistic if they would just go ahead and send rejection letters to those waitlisted. Waitlisting applicants seems like cruel torture.
ReplyDeleteSo much useless banter on this blog. I was accepted to Chapel Hill, though UVA is my top choice. I'm now wait-listed at UVA. What a pity!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's me again.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I remember reading on the transfer admission website right when I applied is that they have to have something like 65% of transfer applicants come from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
That, of course, means, that many of you with hard fought 4.0s and loads of activities were waitlisted in favor of people who did work you could have done drunk or half-asleep. I can't really talk, I was waitlisted with a 3.25 at Colgate (which is a pretty damned difficult school) taking two required classes, 1 200 level and 1 300 level class first semester.
Of course, I see now that if this rule about community college kids didn't exist, you lot would've gotten in and I probably would have been rejected.
Also, my dad talked to the people at the Alumni Office (both of my parents are alumni) and they said they often waitlisted people from regular colleges to see their mid-term grades. But honestly, "some of them trickle out to mid-July" is just unacceptable.
Check these out guys!

Boy it would have been nice living in charlottesville next year. there really is no comparison, especially when you have to suffer the lake effect at Notre Dame ( rain and snow everyday)
ReplyDeleteI know that some of you will go back to read these earlier blogs. If you're waitlisted, you still have a chance of getting in. I got in from the waitlist. All of the hard work is definitely worth it--I've never been happier.
ReplyDeleteI have some advice: meet ALL prerequisites over the summer, and stay in touch with admissions to give them the details. Remember, they're very busy this time of year, so you may want to send a short email--instead of calling--to the appropriate counselor. Even if you do come off the waitlist and are offered admission, if you haven't met the prerequisites, you will not be able to attend the school.
Another thing, if ultimately you are not offered admission, try not to be too upset. The school only has so many seats, so there are always worthy people who have to be declined. I do not envy the admissions counselors who have to make these choices, and I'm sure that it's the hardest part of the job.
