Please use this post to ask
questions if you have been offered admission.
Congratulations! As I said in my
previous post, you will receive a letter (in a thin-ish envelope) via
the snail mail in the next week or so. We never promise admission to
a particular major. You have been
admitted to the school to which you have applied. Major declaration and planning
will occur at orientation and over the summer. For those of you who applied to
the Curry Teaching program, you’ll find out whether you’ve been admitted to the
Master’s program in your letter. For those of you who applied to Architecture
or McIntire, watch out for information on required summer courses (in your
offer letter).
Your $400 admissions deposit can be
paid online. This goes towards your
first semester’s tuition. Below your online “letter,” you should see buttons to
accept or decline our offer of admission.
Clicking “YES” will not completely secure your spot in the class. You will need to pay your $400 deposit to set
it in stone. You can pay with a credit
card (we do not accept VISA) or with an e-check. As specified in the letter, you will have
until May 15th to put down a deposit.
Financial aid information will start to go out next week, if your financial aid has been reviewed.
You should keep an eye on your to-do
list in the event that Student Financial Services needs more information from
you.
We do not have open houses for admitted transfer students. You are welcome to visit and look around, but keep in mind that our students and faculty are in the midst of final exams.
As far as the next steps go, 72 hours after you deposit, you should be able to take UVA’s responsible computing quiz, officially set up your email account and register for orientation. Housing and dining information will take a couple of weeks to come. It is so important to keep an eye on both your old and new email addresses. EVERYTHING happens on email. Don’t miss important deadlines by ignoring these accounts. Your academic credit will not be evaluated until you pay your deposit and send in your final transcript. This evaluation is ongoing until summer orientation. If you’re curious about what might transfer, check out our transfer credit analyzer. Generally, you will not sign up for classes until orientation. Your school may tell you otherwise, but this won't happen to until late Jane at the earliest.
If you decide not to come to UVa, please be sure to decline the offer using the other button-- the "NO" button. We and our wait listed students would really appreciate you taking the time to do this.
As an incoming third year, can we assume that we have a reasonably high chance of getting the major that was selected on our application? I know there are not guarantees of getting a specific major, but do transfers usually get placed into their first choice?
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, what was the approximate acceptance rate?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hello Matt,
ReplyDeleteWhile you're correct that no major is guaranteed for incoming third years, the selectivity of each program varies - with plenty of majors being open to declaring while others can be more selective. This is dependent on the department and the college, of course - so we don't have placement rates for specific majors.
Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteAs an incoming third year to the E-school, it would set me behind a great deal if I was not accepted into the major that I have been taking classes in during my sophomore year at my previous institution. When will we know if we have been accepted into our major? Is there any contact in the E-school that could give me an idea of their placement rates for specific majors? Thanks.
Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteShould I be worried about having my admission rescinded due to one C in my final semester? My final GPA will be 3.6. I'm a 3rd year transfer to SEAS.
Thank you very much.
Ryan,
ReplyDeleteThe overall offer rate was 34%, but this differs from school to school. The admit rate to McIntire brings this down. In general, it's around 40%.
Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to still attend the local community college while attending UVA (dual enrollment) to complete an additional two Spanish courses that were recommended for transfer? Or must I take them at UVA?
Note: I do understand that I need to complete 60 credits at UVA, doing so won't be an issue.
Best.
Two quick questions.
ReplyDelete1) What kind of a time commitment is the summer orientation? I see that the fall orientation is over a weekend. Is the summer one a similar set up? Is it two full days of activities? I ask because I need to arrange childcare so the sooner I know the details the better.
2) I have questions about using the GI Bill to pay for tuition, should I contact the financial services office about this or is there a specific contact for veterans?
Thank you for your time and I am really stoked to have been accepted!
Hi Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteI was accepted to A&S, and I am beyond grateful/thrilled. However, I am now worried that my financial aid award will not be sufficient given my out of state status. I know that UVA claims to meet 100% of need, but I'm curious if my OOS status could harm my individual FA. If my aid proves to be enough, I will surely come to UVA!
Thank you!
Caroline Price
Hello Matt,
ReplyDeleteThe advising and course selection process will occur this summer beginning with orientation - if the school does collect such data on majors, you would look to contact their office directly. The engineering school's contact info can be found here: http://www.seas.virginia.edu/undergrad/transfers.php
Hello Njo,
ReplyDeleteWhen final grades come in for admitted and waitlisted transfer applicants they are reviewed individually and in the context of the overall application. I can't say how likely one grade would impact that decision without that context and the rest of the grades.
Hello Zachariah,
ReplyDeleteOnce you enroll at UVa, you would need approval from the dean of your college to take coursework outside of the university. The likelihood of such would certainly depended on the reasoning and specific situation!
Hello Kr,
ReplyDeleteWhich college at UVa are you enrolling in? I can look for the logistic details of the specific school's orientation. And yes, you GI bill question should go to our Student Financial Services office: 434.982.6000.
Hello Caroline,
ReplyDeleteYou are correct that the financial aid program is designed to meet demonstrated need for our students, both in state and out of state. I would look to the sfs.virginia.edu website for the cost estimation calculator, as well as your SIS account (to check your to-do list for financial aid materials) to make sure your aid package details come ASAP!
I am thrilled to be accepted to McIntire School of Commerce. However, I would really like to see my financial aid award package before committing as FA is a huge factor under my consideration. I just found some financial aid requirement material on my to-do list on my SIS account. I will need a few days to get all the required material together for submission. I am extremely concerned whether I will still be able to see my aid package before the deposit deadline on the 15th.
ReplyDeleteTransfermer,
ReplyDeleteI was accepted into the Curry School. I will definitely be giving the Financial Services people a call. Thank you!
Really looking forward to this fall!
Karen
Do you have a website that compares the cost of each dorms and residential college?
ReplyDeleteHi Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteI received my Preliminary Award Letter earlier today, and was heartbroken by the amount of grant-aid I received, as my family is certain that I will not be able to afford UVA with this award. UVA has been my dream school for years; thus, I am curious how I can being the process of appealing my preliminary award in hopes of making UVA affordable for myself and my family. Could you point me in the right direction, Transfermer?
Thanks,
Caroline
Jocelin,
ReplyDeleteProvided you submitted your CSS Profile and your FAFSA on time by April 1, we may be able to give you an extension on the deadline. For now, please check your to-do list every day to see if any new material has been requested by Student Financial Services.
Kr Beach,
Summer orientation for you will likely be on July 20 for you. You can always double-check with the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs.
Rashika,
You can compare cost and amenities using this site - http://housing.virginia.edu/incoming-transfers
Caroline,
I’m sorry you were disappointed by your financial aid award. If you have questions, please reach out to Student Financial Services. There is an appeals process, but SFS rarely makes changes to their original award. Again, contact SFS for more information.
Is there any way you can meet up with an advisor or sign up for classes before your orientation date? Im an engineering transfer so I have signed up for section K so I feel as though most classes might be filled up before my orientation date.
ReplyDeleteOmid,
ReplyDeleteEngineering transfers should be able to sign up for classes towards the end of July. You'll be hearing from the engineering registrar mid-summer.
Should I wait until my graduation status is reflected on my final transcripts or just send them when my grades from this semester have been updated?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your time,
Karen
Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the Foreign Language Placement Exams, it states: "Students who have studied Spanish prior to coming to UVA and who wish to continue in Spanish will be placed according to scores obtained on the College Entrance Examination Board SAT II tests, the AP Exam, the IB (high level) exam, or the U.Va. Spanish placement exam."
Does the Foreign Language Placement Exam need to be taken for those transferring credits from a Spanish 101-202 in from the Community College system? Or only applicable to those coming from High School level foreign language courses?
Much appreciate in advance for the clarity!
Hi Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Pauline DiLorenzo, and I have officially enrolled in UVA (Yay!). I sent in my transcript about a week ago from a system called Parchment through my previous university. Parchment sent me an email that UVA had received my transcript and that item on the to-do list had been removed from my SIS account. But I have been unable to see my transferred credits on SIS. Is this problematic? I just want to make sure that my transferred credits get on my record.
Secondly, is there any way I can receive or communicate with an adviser before stepping onto campus? I am a big planner and I want to try to pursue a double major, so I think it would really help if UVA's advising does that sort of thing.
Thanks,
Pauline
