Getting the Ball Rolling For Those Applying on March 1

Today is the deadline to submit your application. If you want to be considered for admission for fall 2017, complete the entire application (yes, personal information, yes to the essays, yes to your current and previous course listings) by today. This will get the ball rolling.

Understand that this is a process that involves various systems and humans!  You should receive a pretty automatic confirmation from the Common Application once you submit your application.
Please read the "After You Submit" instructions on this page -->http://admission.virginia.edu/admission/instructions.

It will take time for us to confirm receipt of your application here in our office. Remember that we are likely working through processing 2,000 applications for transfer. Even if you receive this confirmation after March 1, it means your application was completed on time. Do not worry if you don't get your confirmation after March 1.  Just make sure you apply by March 1, to get the ball rolling.

Transcripts can come in after March 1. Just make sure you apply by March 1, to get the ball rolling.
Please allow 7-10 business days for your transcripts to be matched up with your application.

Here are some tips/reminders from our first-year Notes From Peabody blog. Good luck!

1. Add uvaapplicationinfo@virginia.edu and undergradadmission@virginia.edu to your safe senders list.

We send important application updates and requests for info from these two accounts. If you put them in your address book, that will hopefully make sure our emails don't go into your junk folder. I know a lot of people use email sporadically these days, but we use it a lot. You need to keep an eye on your inbox for messages from us.

2. Keep an eye out for a SIS Login email.

A few days after we download your application and get it into our system, you'll get an email about logging into SIS. SIS is where you will monitor your application status for both admission and financial aid. On notification day, you'll also check your decision in SIS.

3. Your application will probably be incomplete when you log in.

At this point, most applications are incomplete. Please do not worry and do your best not to call our office! As long as you submitted your application in time, everything will be okay.

  1. Thanks! This whole blog is always helpful. Any estimation for when transfer decisions will be made?

  3. Transfermer,

I've applied to SEAS as a 3rd year transfer under the VCCS guaranteed transfer agreement with a 3.8 GPA currently and all classes required taken. If I were to get a C (my only C) in an engineering elective (Linear Algebra) in my last semester. What are the chances I would not get accepted?

    Thank you very much.

  4. I think that as long as you fulfill all of the transfer requirements and maintain a GPA of 3.4 or above, you're fine. I'm not 100% certain though.

  5. What if there was a glitch in the Common App last night? Will my application still be reviewed?

  6. I know on SIS it says that the to-do list will be updated after 3-4 weeks even if the transcripts have arrived but I have had the account for a little while and when I first logged in it was saying I needed 3 transcripts which I had already sent...a couple of weeks have gone by and I just checked recently and now out of the three it says I only need one left. Well, the one transcript was sent off in January and I just wanna make sure it's there. Is there any way I could check?

  7. Because the GAA outlines only academic stipulations, if you will not be applying under the GAA (due to some disqualifying dual enrollment grades) do my extracurriculars such as community volunteering help in the transfer decision process assuming grades are A/B's since graduating? It seems like UVA's first emphasis is academic ability but how important are EC's for transfers?

  8. Nathan,
You will not be accepted under the GAA because as bullet point #5 under section 1 of the Engineering GAA points out, you must earn a B or better in English 111, and all Math, Physics and Chemistry courses. There is still a chance you could be admitted, but we would need to look at your entire transcript and your application.

    Destiny,
Your application was submitted successfully. You have likely received your SIS information by now.

    Clarissa D,
Checking your to-do list is how you check on the situation. You can confer with the sending institution to see when then sent it and to what address, but if it does not disappear from your to-do list in the next week, you may have to order another transcript.

    Billy,
Extra-curricular activities are important, but do not play as large a role in the transfer admissions process as they do in the first-year admissions process. When you transfer, you have to jump head first in your second or third year and we want to ensure you can be academically successful. Good grades at your current institution assist us in making this decision.

  9. Do you treat high school classes/grades the same as college grades/courses? How much emphasis is placed on college course difficulty in comparison to high school?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Is the SIS the main thing we should pay attention to for the checklist? My SIS says my application is complete but myuva says that I am still missing a high school transcript.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Will I be sent some sort of confirmation once my mid-term report is received by your office?

    ReplyDelete
  12. John Andrews,

The more time you have spent in the college or away from high school, the less emphasis we put on your high school record. If you graduated from high school in 2016, your transcript is still very important.

    Matt,

Both should update at the same time, but SIS is more real-time. If push comes to shove and still missing your high school transcript when time is running short, you will receive an email from us.

    Prospective Transfer,
Unfortunately not. This is not a required document, so we don't promise confirmation.

  13. Transfermer,

What are the cases where a transfer student's acceptance is rescinded? Would earning a disqualifying grade under the guaranteed transfer agreement cause a student to lose their admission?

    Thankyou.

  14. What a great resource UVA provides for prospective transfers! Just wanted to thank you, whoever manages this.

  15. I am still waiting on my transcript from Australia, I have already contacted my college in Australia but they told me there is no way to track the transcript, but it usually takes around 10-15 days.
In the meantime, I got an email from UVA saying I need to send those documents no later than April 3rd. I am not sure if my transcript will get there by the April 3rd. What happens is that case?

  16. Transfermer, do you know how fast summer classes fill up? I see 3rd and 4th years can sign up on the 10th, 1st and 2nd on the 11th, and visiting undergrads on the 12th. I am the latter and to be honest, I'm a little nervous about the likelihood they will be all full. Just wondering if they fill up quick is all. Thanks.

  17. Transfermer,

I'm Caroline Price, a freshman at a small liberal arts college in NY, and I'm hoping to transfer to UVA this Fall as a sophomore. Over the years I have heard that large public universities tend to view out-of-state, sophomore-transfer applicants as less desirable. Is this fact also true at UVA? UVA is far and away my top choice, but I just want to be realistic with my chances given my sophomore and OOS transfer status.

    Thank you!

  18. Nathan,
We take these on a case-by-case basis. There is no one typical situation, so there is no one policy or rule that have.

    Abipsha,
We will do our best to hold your application until it arrives.

    William,
I don't know how fast classes fill up. They are not quite as overpopulated as they are during the school year. I think you should wait to hear you've been admitted before signing up.

    Caroline,
Typically, applicants(in-state and out-of-state)who present a weak high school record and a so-so first semester in college do not fare well as rising second year applicants. In that case, we would want to see more college work from the student. If high school was relatively strong and the first semester went well, the applicant would be more competitive. One must keep in mind though, that the admit rate for transfers is still selective at 40%.

  19. When sending my official transcripts to admissions, is there an email I can send an electronic PDF to, or am I required to send it via mail?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Robin,
If you are applying right now, the email you received last night will give details. Please have your transcripts mailed directly from the registrar. Alternatively, you can use their online services like Parchment on the National Student Clearinghouse to have them email your official e-script.

  22. Hey Transfermer,

First off, thanks for the great blog. It's super helpful. I have a couple questions though. I'm applying via GAA from NVCC to SEAS.

    1) It's my understanding that SAT scores do not expire, but would it be beneficial if I retook the SAT? I last took it in 2006.

    2) Do AP scores expire? I have a 4 on AP World History from 2005 and a 5 from AP Psycholgy from 2007.

    Thanks!

  23. Hey everyone,

I'm a third-year transfer applicant and made a group chat for potential fall transfers to introduce themselves and help alleviate each other's stress from this process. The link is below if you are interested!

  24. Transfermer,
Does course difficulty play a part in the admissions process? I believe all but one of my classes transfer over, but my second semester classes are much more difficult than my first semester classes (ex. statistics and calculus this semester, 18 credits vs. 15). With that being said, does the committee take note of how I'm doing with a tougher schedule vs. easier schedule via my mid-term report? Or do they simply look at grades regardless of class?

Also, I mentioned "campus" instead of "grounds" in my app...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also, does the committee take note of what school you are transferring from? Does a 3.7 from a higher ranked institution warrant better chances than a 3.7 from a lower ranked institution (when comparing applicants)? Thanks again! This is all very helpful.

  26. Andrew,
The SAT is no longer required for the GAA. The SAT is only required for students applying to the McIntire School of Commerce. Testing is also required for all applicants who attended a high school where the language of instruction was not English.

    John Andrews,
If you sent a mid-term by the end of March, we will take a look at it. We look very closely at classes, making sure you've checked off the pre-requisite boxes before you get here. Regarding your second question, not necessarily. Your course selection matters more.

  27. Hello Transfermer,

going off of your response to John Andrews, if we sent a mid-term report in early April, would it still be reviewed?

    Thank you for your time
