It's hard to believe, but school begins for most of you in less than a month. It's time to look towards the next application cycle. To start your application, go to www.commonapp.org and put UVA down as one of your schools. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2012. Decisions will be posted in early December. There is no wait list for this process.
We accept applications for the spring for the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Urban Planning and Architectural History programs in the School of Architecture.
Hi, I am new to this blog and I had a few questions about the transfer process. I graduated from HS this year and I'll be attending NVCC for two years and hopefully be transferring to UVa. Do you accept transfers who apply after their 1st year at NVCC? and if you do, What is the acceptance rate? Are the second year students favored over first year? Also how much do HS GPA and SAT scores matter? Finally how do extra curricular activities and essays play into the admission process? Are they critical in determining an applicants acceptance?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
if we applied for the fall 2012 but got denied, can we just have our application roll over or do we have to redo a whole new application?
ReplyDeleteIf we would like to apply for Spring of 2013 and our current institution gives a "mid-semester grade report" in Mid October will we be able to send that once its released to add to our application?
ReplyDeletemeowmix,
ReplyDeleteYes, we accept transfers after one year, but these students tend to have strong high school transcripts. We don't have the statistics for rising 2nd and 3rd years, but it's likely about half and half. As a rising 2nd year, your HS transcript and testing account for half of the review. Your one semester of college grades accounts for the other half. The more semesters you spend in college(maxing out at 4), the less we rely on high school work. Essays and extracurriculars are important. But if you can't do the work at your school, you won't be competitive in the admission process.
anon,
You will have to start a new application for Spring 2013 because it's a new calendar year.
UVAhopeful,
Yes please! It's not required, but we'll happily take a look at it.
Going off of meowmix's comment, do you guys look at all four years of HS or just junior and senior year? As for the SAT, what is the average score of both 1st year and 2nd year accepted transfer? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am interested in knowing the average SAT score for students who transfer after one and two years of college too please.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in the School of Nursing, so I would also like to know what the SAT statistics are for transfer students specifically in the SON.
Also, does it make a difference when a first year transfer student applies during the year, as in during first or second semester? Granted, there will be more credits completed during the second semester, but does it matter since you will see our transcripts with all of our grades eventually anyway?
I was previously waitlisted as a transfer applicant for the fall '12semester. I was wondering if this works in my favor or works against me? Also you previously mentioned that the more semesters accumulated the less HS is weighted. If the first two semesters of college had similar GPA's is that a positive or negative in the review process?

ReplyDeleteCreate an alias next time We look at the entire high school record and EVERY college course. We don’t have an average SAT score for transfers. We tend to get nervous about scores below 500.
WhatDreamsAreMadeOf,
We don’t have specific statistics for transfers and their schools. We do not take mid-semester freshman and the nursing school only takes applications in the fall.
WaitlistB4,
Welcome back. The fact that you were wait listed before does not work against you. It’s hard to tell what you mean by similar GPAs. If you have a 3.0 and earn a 3.0 again, then your chances will probably be similar, but it’s not a negative per se.
I am in my 5th semester of community college in Georgia. I am graduating this year. I have a 3.5 but I also have one c in Calc 2. Am I eligible for transfer admissions this spring?
ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteWe would have to look at your whole transcript and application. The average GPA for an admitted spring transfer is about 3.5/3.6.
if you apply for spring of 2013 (and are accepted) and for a financial reason can't attend, is it possible to defer your acceptance to the following semester?
ReplyDeleteI am entering my 2nd year at gmu and am wondering of it is better to apply for spring In the college of arts and sciences and then at UVA apply to the School of Commerce or apply straight to the school of commerce as a third year in Spring 2013?
ReplyDeleteHow many instructor recommendations are required to be sent for the transfer appliaction and if one is not accepted for Spring Transfer is possible to be reconsidered for the Fall Transfer?

ReplyDeletei applied for this fall and got waitlisted and i am trying again in the spring. do the admissions gets mailed before Final grades for fall semester come out or do the admissions offices wait to get those grades? Also is there a waitlist for transferring spring semester
UVA123,
ReplyDeleteNo, we only defer from fall to fall. If you apply for spring and can’t come, you’ll need to apply again for fall.
Ryan Elci,
We want to admit students in the spring who will go into the College and graduate from the College and don’t take kindly on those who mention Commerce in their application. If you want Commerce, you should apply for fall.
Anon asking about recommendations,
As you’ll see on the right pane of the blog, the instructor recommendation or evaluation, is not required, only recommended. If you are a sophomore who doesn’t get in for spring, you may apply again for fall.
Anon who applied for fall,
As you’ll see on our transfer website, we will release decisions around December 1. We do not use fall grades as part of our review for the spring application review. You may send mid-term grades if you like. No, there is no wait list in for the spring semester.
Do we need an interview?
ReplyDeleteIf we did well in all other classes getting A's and B's but due to problems that arose throughout the semester and due to unfortunate circumstances caused us to do poorly in one class, if we retake the class, perform much better in the class, send a mid-year a report and on the common app explain what happened to cause this problem, will be this be ok per say?
ReplyDeleteI am slightly confused as to how the financial aid works for the Spring 2013 transfer students. When are the deadlines for the FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE?
ReplyDeleteAnon asking about interviews,
ReplyDeleteWe don’t do interviews.
Anon with As and Bs,
Sure, you can do this, but it won’t erase the old grade. We’ll appreciate something like a mid-semester report or explanation if you repeat a course.
Anonymous writers,
Please make up an alias.
Eduaramaldo,
The deadline for financial aid is also October 1. That would decide your aid for the spring. If you come, you’ll then need to complete forms again for the fall/spring 2013-2014 school year.
what is the transfer acceptance rate for spring 13? and around how many apply? also, if fall grades are not considered, will sending a mid-year report help the application if you want fall grades to be considered?
ReplyDeleteIf I apply and am accepted for Fall 2013 can I defer to the next fall under the Guaranteed Admissions program? Also, will they accept my application under the GA if I'm going to take classes towards my degree in the summer (2013)after I have submitted my application?
ReplyDeleteCan I send my transcripts and test scores before my application is turned in? Or does my application need to be submitted before I send my other materials?
ReplyDeleteThank you.
hi, what would happen if you submit your common app a little bit later than october 1st. had technical difficulties in submitting and wasn't submitted properly on the deadline.
ReplyDeleteI didn't apply to transfer for fall 2013, however I am interested to apply for spring 2013. I am currently a business major and thinking of applying UVA for business(commerce). Since UVA doesn't accept commerce during spring do I wait until next semester?
ReplyDeleteSuperb!
