Spring Applications
We received just over 300 applications. This is up from about 250 last year. It varies from year to year, but we'll admit anywhere from 30-40 students. We hope to have all of the decisions out the first week of December.
Correction: If you are currently in a four-year school, and this is your junior year, you are INELIGIBLE to apply. The only exception is the Engineering School, and of course none of you who applied for Spring applied there.
Transfermer.. I have two questions for you. First, what if I am currently attending 2 year community college(thomas nelson to be exact) and applying for arts and science? Am I eligible? Second, I was told that even if I didn't take any foreign language course in college, if I can speak speak another language, I am allowed to take a test to be qualified, is that correct?
Transfermer... I just wanted to add one more question. I am graduating with a.s degree and applying as third year. I took SAT score over 3 years ago back in high school and it is not so good. Although, my academic grades from vccs is very outstanding. Now, is SAT scores as important as my vccs academic grades?
Just running off of estimates, what number of applications, of the 300, will be automatically denied because the applicant is attempting the Junior Year--Four Year college transfer?
Hey all you people applying to transfer into UVA this Spring 2009!!! I am a current second year student at UVA. I was wondering if any of you are considering/planning on living on grounds (in University on grounds housing). If you are please e-mail me at vla8w@virginia.edu or vadelsen@gmail.com . I can answers some of the questions you may have about housing and give you a tour of Gooch/Dillard...the place where most transfer students live on grounds. Best of luck to all on the application/acceptance process.
Dear Transfermer, In the common application, there is an essay that says, "Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve." and on the UVA supplement, the essay instructs us to "1. How do the possible career or professional plans you indicated on the Common Application relate to your planned course of study? If you are applying to the College of Arts and Sciences and are undecided about your major, indicate your general area of interest." Could you please clarify both essay questions? They seem very similar. Thanks! -Chuck
If you first language is not English, it is possible for you to be exempted from the language requirement using the SAT Subject Test or a process of testing/interviewing at the University.
Your SAT are slightly less important than you courses and grades. You won't need to re-take the exam.
As a junior, you can apply for the spring semester, but as junior or rising senior, you cannot apply for the Fall semester.
Chuck,
While I'll admit that these are sort of similar, one asks more about why you want to transfer and what you see yourself doing here. The other asks what you see yourself doing with the degree. Take your time with these and they'll make more sense.
Why do Va Community College students have a higher chance of being accepted, I have taken courses at both a community college (NOVA) and at a four year university and have found the four year college courses to be more difficult and demanding? It doesn't seem to make much sense.
I realize that this is counterintuitive. There has been a huge initiative by the state to get more community college transfers into four year schools. Therefore, we are increasing our numbers. However, on the whole, we still have more four year school applicants applying. Each class is made up of about 60% 4 yr students and 40% community college students.
Anon, I don't think your opinion applies to everyone. Just because it is "community college" doesn't mean it is easier than 4-year college. It really matters what subject it is, what school it is, and who the instructor is. There are many professors at the community college I am currently attending who also teaches at 4-year college, and their teaching style and materials are exactly the same.
I agree with u.va applicant – program rigorousness depends heavily on the subjects and the instructors as well as the school. If you have someone from a 4 year who has a 3.5 GPA with remedial English and liberal arts math, obviously that individual will be less competitive (and less prepared for UVA) than a student at NVCC with a 4.0 GPA who’s taken statistics and higher level English.
I think it really depends more on the individual candidate (or maybe I just hope that because I’m the second guy in the scenario above).
i would like to know if the statistics for spring applications are the same for fall applications. i wish to apply in the fall and go to a 4 year school, i would like to know what my odds of getting in are.
check previouse posts. acceptance rate for fall is 30-40% and for spring is around 10%, because little over 300 applied and only 30-40 spaces are available for spring.
10% admit rate!?!? With odds like this, we're not left much room for hoping. I just wish that UVA didn't make us sit on our hands for a month to sweat it out.
First year applicants have to wait 3+ months and Fall transfer applicants wait 2+ months. This is a short haul. We appreciate your patience in letting us read carefully and thoroughly.
I appreciate your comments regarding freshman versus transfer application wait times, but its also a matter of arranging how I will come home; I am at a four-year college over 1000 miles from home, and it is impossible to nail down my winter break travel arrangements while I am waiting on a decision that will decide whether I have to clear out of a dorm or just pack up two suitcases.
All the same, I appreciate the delicate balancing act that this process must be for you all in admissions, so here's to wishing you could only let ALL of us in!
I wish U.va would accept everyone who has achieved good gpa which shows how hard one tried. U.va is going to accept 30-40 this spring but i bet there are tons of people who have good gpa and I am sure each one of them tried hard to obtain good gpa.
I dunno, the 10-13% acceptance odds do not seem good.
ReplyDeleteyea.. seriously.. it's 1 out of 10. it's going to be very tough
ReplyDeleteyet, we can reapply if we don't get accepted, right?
ReplyDeleteYou can always reapply. It's better if you meet the VCCS requirements because you are guaranteed in August, regardless.

I understand that there are a limited number of spots, but who has the best chance-- students transferring from a university or a community college?
ReplyDeleteStudents transferring from a Va Community College have a slight advantage over those coming from a four-year school
ReplyDeleteTransfermer, I am sorry but what do you mean by "slight"? does that mean less advantage or more advantage?
