If you've been trafficking our website for many months, you'll notice that the general website has been redesigned. Well, now the admissions website has gone through a beautiful upgrade. The text on the website has not changed, but you'll see straight away that the placement of things has changed. Please explore it on your own, but as a tip, from
www.virginia.edu/undgradadmission, about a fifth of the way down, click on "I am a..." and you'll click on "transfer student." Take the time to familiarize yourself with the website. We hope you like it!
I have a question, in the transfer course requirements it says this about the College of Arts and Sciences, "Candidates with an associate's degree or two years of college coursework are preferred. Students transferring after one year of college should have completed at least 30 semester-hours" So can the 30 semester-hours include transfer credit granted for successfully completing AP exams? By the way, the new design looks really better!
ReplyDelete-Chuck
This does not include AP, IB or DE Credit
ReplyDeleteI was wondering- how necessary is a teacher recommendation to a transfer application? Would not submitting one potentially make or break an applicant? Also, it says that certain majors are more competitive, like economics. Does it hurt my chances of admission if I put this down as my major?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Am I at odds against the others if I have 29 credits by the time I am trying to apply? And will you look at the AP exam scores?
ReplyDelete-Chuck
How heavily are SAT scores weighed in the admission process? I am interested in transferring to the school of commerce and I have notice that they have provided the statistic of the mean SAT score of each accepted class. The mean score was 1250 for the 2008 class. If my SAT score is lower than this from high school should I consider taking the SAT over again before I apply to be more competitive?
ReplyDeleteEJ,
ReplyDeleteWe like to see recommendations for an added angle on an applicant. This will not make or break you. This is a good question about the majors. It means that while you might be offered into the College of Arts and Sciences, you might not be offered your major of choice due to space constraints within the major.
Chuck,
We are looking for at least 24-30 credits. We do look at exam scores.
Jason,
The SATs are examined more closely for someone applying to the Commerce school. But, we are more concerned with you earning As in your classes. You do not need to take the test again, but you should submit the scores you have.
For those reading this who didn't take the SAT back in high school, and you're PLANNING ON APPLYING to COMMERCE, I'd highly recommend that you take the test; that even goes for those who have been out of high school for more than five years.
Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteWhen are releasing admission notification? Can we know earlier than December 1st?
Hopeful,
ReplyDeleteWe hope release them the first week of December and no earlier.
Will having received an associates degree prior to transfer (in December) affect the admissions chance?
ReplyDeleteuvadreamer,
ReplyDeleteWhat's most important is that you have the courses we're looking for in an applicant.
Transfermer, during the process of viewing applications, do you decide either application is accepted or denied during the first view? If so, what if you deny one's application, but you find that application better than the rest later on?
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by "What's most important is that you have the courses we're looking for in an applicant."?
ReplyDelete-Chuck
What if the applicant has all of the courses required for the guaranteed admissions program for August, are those considered "what you're looking for" ?
ReplyDelete51423,
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to go into the process, but each application gets a very thorough read by the committee to build the transfer class each spring and fall.
As I've said before we are looking for the majority of the course found on this website to be completed
www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission
/transferrequirements.html
Like high school, does the committee look into extracurricular activities in college such as SGA or Honor Council? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDoes UVA take into consideration an applicant's experience attending Governor's school or Boys/Girls State?
ReplyDeleteWe look at all extracurriculars, but tend not to dwell on summer governor's school or boys/girls state. We mostly interested in what you've been balancing in college.
ReplyDeleteI know that extracurriculars are important, but how about work? If we are employed, do you count that as an extracurricular or are you considering strictly academic extracurriculars?
ReplyDeleteWould I have less chance of being accepted if I am not registered to vote? I have good reason why I am not registered, but would like to know if it will effect anything.
ReplyDeleteuvadreamer,
ReplyDeleteExtracurriculars are anything outside of the classroom, so a job falls in this category.
k,
There is absolutely no connection. That would be illegal.
You know, I realize people are anxious to get decisions and everything, but wow, some of these questions on here are getting pants on head retarded. Seriously?? Voting??? What a brilliant question to formulate at 1:20am. I have some (even if it is little) faith in humanity, so I am going to safely assume that if you are asking such retarded questions to begin with, you probably have no chance of getting in. Also, if you are applying for Jan. transfer, the process is over, just wait it out 2 weeks, keep your dumb questions to yourself, and wait for your decision to come.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day. =)
woah woah easy there. He was just asking a question. There is no rights for you to state someone else's question retarded. No offense, but you calling someone retarded makes you retarded as well. Good day :)
ReplyDeleteThis is getting a little bit out of hand. Anonymous from 11/19, don't call people "retarded". It is a derogatory term in my opinion. Be more respectful to people. You could have called that question "off-topic" or "irrelevant".

Folks,
ReplyDeleteWe all know that this is a nerve-wracking part of the process. You've done all you can do to send in a great application and the wait seems neverending. Maybe you're second-guessing yourself or on the other hand, you're feeling very confident. Whatever the case, let's try and be supportive or open-minded. Afterall, that's the etiquette we in the admission office expect on our blogs. Thanks for being cooperative and soooo patient. You have all been great troopers in this journey.
Knowing the chance of getting in is roughly 10%, statistically disappointment is more likely this December. I turned in my application way early, about the beginning of this semester, and I called the office to ask this but I want to make sure. If we don't make it for January, and want to try again, I was told we can just call the office and ask for our file to be rolled over (without having to pay the fee again) for fall transfer, is that correct?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Yes, please do address the process for "rollover" of applications from Spring '09 to Fall '09. Other than an updated transcript, are there be any other documents that would need to be resubmitted? Is a new application required? What if we submitted an Arts Supplement with our spring app., will that automatically rollover?
ReplyDeleteHi transfermer, I've attended vccs school for 2 and 1/2 years(fall 06-fall 08,) and I am graduating after this fall semester. Am I still eligible to apply as third year transfer student? Can I still apply if I do not get accepted this time?
ReplyDeleteIn my mind, it's better to be positive. But, I will tell you that instructions for applying again (if you're eligible) will be detailed in your letter.
ReplyDeleteLee, you should write us a note to remind us of the arts supplement.
Anon, seeing as you are in a community college program, you will be able to apply again. A four year student would not.
Transfermer... If I do not get accepted this spring, and wish to take more classes at my current vccs school (cal 1 and 2, and non-western history, i can take placement test for foreign language) over spring and summer to have all guaranteed admission required courses, am I still eligible to apply? Because then I would have taken classes here for 3 years and I would be considered senior..?
ReplyDeleteTransfermer,
ReplyDeleteThanks for answering our questions!
I have a question about the instructor evaluation. I understand that you recommend them, and I plan on completing one for that reason, but I was wondering if you recommend just one or two?
Also, can those recommendations only be sent by mail and not online?
Transfermer has stated that they are recommended, and 1 is sufficient. Recommendation now can not be submitted through online because they are now using commonapp.
ReplyDeleteIn order to qualify for the guaranteed agreement the following fall, you must have all of your courses completed by the end of spring. That aside, you are still eligible for competitive admission even if you take classes in the summer because you are in a non-bachelors degree program.
ReplyDeleteCORRECTION: We do not accept the online recommendations through the common application. DO NOT SEND recommendations using this method. I'll write a post about this.
Oh I knew we couldn't send it through the Common App! I should have specified that I meant through e-mail when I said "online". Is it still all right to use the Common App's format for instructor evaluation's?
