Of the six schools that transfers can apply to, the School of Commerce, the School of Architecture and Education School are slightly more competitive. There is less space available in these schools and therefore less space for transfers. Lucily, we find that the majority of our applicants are interested in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. While this may seem like it would make it more competitive, there is more space available for these applicants.
can you please provide us with transfer statistics. i do not know if that will help or hurt many, but i am just really curious. good luck with your evaluations.hopefully i would be one of the lucky people to be offered admission. may you be the judge of the deserving!

ReplyDeleteWe do not publish specific statistics. Overall, close to 35% of transfer applicants are offered admission.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that the acceptance rate for VCCS students is higher than if you were to apply from other state schools. Is this generally the case?
ReplyDeleteI am currently enrolled in a VCCS school and know of the articulation agreement between the two schools. I could not apply under it because I did not obtain my associates degree. However, I have obtained all the other requirements. In your opinion, will UVA admissions consider the articulation in my case?
Thank you!
Eric,
ReplyDeleteThe articulation is very strict. A student must have all of the requirements to qualify for guaranteed admission. However, we do not want this to discourage students who are not "100%" from applying. We will look at and we will admit students who do not have all of the requirements. ONLY, they must be competitive; meaning they should have have top grades (high B to A average) and the majority of the courses completed. OR, if a student wants to apply after one year, he/she must have both competitive high school and college records.
The point is, the agreement is not the only way to be admitted from a Virginia community college. But, it is surefire way to do it if you have time to plan out your years of schooling.
Currently, the admit rate for community college students is similar to four year applicants.
I am a freshman (in that this is my first year in college), but the number of credits from APs I've received (31 for my current college, and 29 for UVA) gives me sophomore status. I'm not sure if I'm applying to UVA as an entering sophomore or junior. I know the website says juniors who are transferring should complete all the general education requirements. I think I have completed all the general education requirements except for one. Will this hurt me?
ReplyDeleteThe more I'm reading, the more worried I am... I am a VCCS student as well, I could not apply under the agreement because I will be finishing my associates this summer, instead of this spring. I have tried very hard to tailor my grades to fit with UVA's curriculum, as this has been my first choice school. Just hoping that a 4.0 at a VCCS college is not looked at negatively because it wasn't achieved at a 4-year institution.
ReplyDeleteDear Transfermer,
ReplyDeleteI attended Montgomery (Community) College in Maryland and I have worked to be a competitive student (good grades, leadership roles, internships). I am just worried that most of the outer-state transfer students who receive admission into UVA and the McIntire School of Commerce attend four-year universities. Is this the case? Thank you for your time,
-Tabassum

ReplyDeleteBrittany,
ReplyDeleteYou are applying as second year/sophomore student. You apply according to the number of years you've spent in college, not your number of credits. If you are admitted, you would enter the University as a sophomore with a lot of credit. After one year in college, you would be expected to have at least half of the suggested coursework listed in our literature.
Danielle,
ReplyDeleteIt's comments like this that worry me! We are in the business of admitting community college and four year school students, in-state students and out-of-state students alike. We created the agreement to reinforce our want for community college students. I believe I said this in earlier posts, but you can be admitted without the agreement(though you must have strong credentials). If you come close to the agreement, you are in even better shape.
Tab,
ReplyDeleteOut of state transfers come from both four year schools and community colleges. If you take the right courses and achieve a high GPA, you would be competitive.
Thank you! I'm very glad to hear that.
ReplyDeleteI am a Virginia resident but attending an out-of-state university and I am a little concerned about my chances of being accepted. I have a high GPA (above a 3.5) and I am very concerned about the whole VCCS acceptance. I am so confused, should I have dropped out of my current university and gone to VCCS instead? What are my chances? I almost feel like staying at my university and performing at a Dean's List level would be better but I am confused and very nervous about my chances.
ReplyDeleteAlso how big is legacy at UVA? My brother is graduating this year and I don't know if that helps at all for my chances. Any comments would be helpful
Whitney - excellent comment. My oldest son went to a quasi-Ivy League school and struggled to maintain a 3.0 average with tons of homework and applied to UVA as a transfer and was rejected whereas my other son coasted through NVCC with little homework and got in through the guaranteed admission program - with a 3.45 GPA.
ReplyDeleteAbout half of the transfer spots go to students attending a VCCS school. Students from VCCS schools are given very strong consideration if they have a good program and good grades. We do offer to many students from non-VCCS schools as well. These students must have impressive courseloads and great grades. I would not go so far as to advise you to drop out of a school where you are doing well and taking the prescribed courses.
ReplyDeleteLegacy status is only extended through your step/parents, not siblings, grandparent, aunts and uncles, etc. Children of alumni are given slight consideration over a non-legacy student.
I am a student at George Mason University. I would just like to know if there are any transfer gateway programs into UVA
ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm sorry. We do not have any gateway programs.
Do transfer students get equal consideration for financial aid?
