Collection Materials for Fall Transfer Admission

 Hello Everyone!

As a quick note, keep in mind that high school transcripts are required for our transfer application. During your upcoming semester break, you might be headed home for the holidays and could use this time to get a head start on your collection of application materials. While you are home over the break, or taking some downtime away from home, take the time to contact your high school when it's back in session in January.  You can order your high school transcript and have it sent to our office even before you've applied. This will give you a nice start in submitting your entire application - and avoid any delays that might happen at the last minute!

Spring Transfer Decisions are Released

 Hello Everyone!

If you haven't checked your application portals yet, do so to see your application decisions for the spring transfer enrollment. 

For this cycle, of the 353 applicants, we were able to extend 53 offers of admission - the College of Arts and Sciences acceptance rate was 15%. 

If you were offered admission, your deposit deadline to confirm your spot in the class is December 15th.

If you were not offered admission, please do keep in mind that the spring process is much more limited and selective than the fall process and we encourage you to roll over your application for the fall term review (this applies to students who will not be finishing their third year at a four-year institution this next spring semester).

If you do choose to roll over your application into the fall pool, you will need to send final fall transcripts and spring curriculum updates by March 1 to be considered. The application fee is waived for students who rollover to the fall. There is a rollover request form in the portal that you can complete after checking your spring decision.

Spring Application Deadline Tomorrow

Hello Everyone!

I'm sure you all have been hard at work already on your spring applications for transferring - but as a reminder, please have everything submitted by tomorrow. If there is a delay in certain materials arriving, we can certainly be flexible, but we'll need the Common Application to be submitted on time regardless.

If you have any updates that need to be submitted after the deadline (and as such, after your Common App has been submitted), you can upload those documents via your MyUVA Application portal. External things, like a letter of recommendation sent from someone else can be emailed to undergradadmission@virginia.edu.

As we're getting going on this year's application - let's recap what's needed in order for the admissions committee to review your transfer application.

1) Your current college transcript- This will give us a record of your previous work and your current courses.

2)Previous college transcript(s)- You are required to list every college you've ever attended. Whether it was last year or many years ago, you need to list it on the common app and you'll need to order your transcripts to come to us.  Please don't leave any colleges out of your application.  We do have ways to double-check your academic history, but we would prefer to hear it from you.

3) Your high school transcript or GED score report- Yes, we require this as well.  If you attended school in a foreign country where the transcript is in another language,  you'll want to have this officially translated. If you attended high school for part of your secondary schooling, but then got the GED, we would like to see both the score report and your partial high school transcript.

4) Standardized testing- This is optional for most applicants. If you have already taken the ACT and SAT and would like for it to be considered, you may submit it - if not, I do not recommend taking the test just for our application! However, if  you graduated from a high school where English was not the language of instruction, you should take the TOEFL or the IELTS. We are more concerned with your transcripts over your test scores, regardless.

Of course, you can't have any of this reviewed without the application, so make sure you apply through the common application spending time on each and every essay.  If you've spent time out of school after high school or at any time in between, please tell us about this time in your life. If there are unexplained gaps, we will reach out to you.

Finalizing Your Fall Semester

 Fall semester is almost here! As you get started with finalizing you fall course selection make sure you're checking the list of pre-requisite courses and planning an appropriate selection.

Certainly, you may have courses at your institution that are required, but if possible, overlap your institutional requirements with courses that fulfill transfer recommendations.

If you go to our website https://admission.virginia.edu/transfer/requirements, you'll see some very helpful introductory information.  Once you click through to each school -- the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Architecture, etc -- you'll see a list of exactly what you need to take.  Follow this closely.  If you would like to see how your school's courses might transfer, you can use our transfer credit analyzer.  This will show most of your institutions and many courses.  Do not fret if courses you have taken do not appear on the analyzer.  It doesn't necessarily mean that they won't transfer, but our registrars will evaluate the credit once you're admitted.

Virtual Transfer Information Sessions Starting in August

Hello Everyone,

We'll be hosting Virtual Information Sessions via Zoom for the foreseeable future on the first Friday of every month at 12pm eastern. The first of these will be next week on the 7th!

The sessions will review pertinent information to the transfer application process as well as a panel of current students to chat about what it's like to attend UVA. There's a nice Q&A function with Zoom that will allow the admission staff and students to answer any and all things you're curious about the school and the transfer admission process.

July Updates

Good morning, everyone! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday weekend. I have a few pieces of information for admitted fall transfers and the waitlisted applicants as well:

-We're still waiting on many incoming enrolling students' final transcripts for this past spring semester. If you haven't sent an official copy to the admission office, please do so ASAP!

-If you were admitted and intend to take a gap year before enrolling, you still need to have a final transcript from this previous semester submitted

-The waitlist is still not officially closed as we continue to balance the enrollment totals with the goals for the class along with delays in final transcripts received, final grade review, and an influx in gap year deferral process. The pandemic's impact on both transcripts and the gap year requests has pushed this back a couple of weeks longer than we all would like, but I would anticipate the waitlist beings officially closed within the next week or two.

-Great Resources for Admitted Students: Dean Ozment and others in the College of Arts and Sciences have compiled a great list of resources for incoming transfers at the following link. It includes FAQs and tips for incoming students, information on advising, and details about summer course registration!

Final Transcripts

We just wanted to send a quick reminder about submitting those final transcripts.  If you have paid your deposit, this is imperative.  If you want to be considered for a spot off the wait list, you should send your transcript.  Do us a favor and make sure all of your grades have been posted before you request the transcript.

You must send a transcript including your spring grades even if you are taking summer courses.  If you are in summer courses, you'll need to send two transcripts - 1) now and 2) when your summer courses are over.

Some of you attend a school with trimesters where transcripts won't be available until June.  Please make sure to send those as soon as possible.

Fall Decisions: The Wait list

You can use this post as a space to make comments or ask questions about the wait list. 

If you are interested in staying on the wait list, please make sure you click the button labeled “remain on the wait list.”  If you don’t do this, we will not review your file again in the future. Once you’ve clicked it, that does the trick.  This page stays the same after you click the button in case you change your mind at a later date. If you do end up changing your mind and want to leave the waiting list, please come back and decline the spot. 

Admitted students have until May 15th to make their decisions. After this deadline passes, we will begin to look to see how many students we can take off the wait list. These numbers vary from year to year and unfortunately, it can be a long process. We won’t make any decisions on May 16^th.  There is a bit of a wait. Why? Because we have to wait for your final exams to end, and for you to send us updated grades. We hope to make our decisions by the end of June however. Offers are usually made in waves meaning we'll reach out one or two times. 

How do we make these decisions?  We absolutely need to see your transcripts listing your spring 2019 grades.  In short, send us your final transcript. Trust us. If you want us to look at your file again, send it along.  You’ll want to do this, but only after your exams are completed and ALL of your grades are posted.  To send this transcript, please use the same address that appears on the right panel of this blog. Ideally, you would want to get these to us by the first week of June, but there is still time after that period. We know there can be extenuating circumstances. If you were not taking classes this spring, feel free to send a note/email/letter of continued interest to undergradadmission@virginia.edu. It will get to the transfer committee, so you do not need to put it to anyone’s attention. Please do not send us additional essays or recommendations. 

If your grades are strong, this may help you earn the offer, but we can’t offer to everyone from the wait list, so we’ll be looking at the strongest candidates.  If you earned poor grades this past spring, it would be difficult for us to admit you.

Our wait lists are divided by school – Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Batten, Commerce, Kinesiology.  So, you are only on a wait list for that particular program.  It is not ranked, and it is only made up of students who elected to remain on the wait list.  That’s why we can’t give a firm number of right now. Historically, about 20% of the applicants are offered a spot on the wait list, but not everyone elects to stay on it.

If you are eventually offered admission from the wait list and need financial aid information in order to make your decision, we will do our best to help you with this.  If you post here, please be considerate of each other’s feelings, emotions, reactions and the like. We will delete any inappropriate commentary. Good luck all!

Fall Decisions: Not offered Admission

This is obviously not the decision you were looking for when you set out on this journey.  We wish we could admit all of the great applicants who have applied.  The reality is that we only have so much space, making admission highly selective.  We want you to be proud of your accomplishments and proud of the fact that you stuck your neck out and applied to transfer from your world to a whole other world. Even that is an accomplishment. This decision is not a declaration of your personal worth or who you are.  We trust that you have other options and hope you can find peace in that next step.

                        

We do not have an appeals process, but depending upon the length of time you’ve been in college and your desired school here at UVA, you may be able to apply again in the future. You’ll need to complete a new application. For those of you who are in your first year of college, or in community college, with an interest in the College of Arts and Sciences, spring 2020 applications (available beginning on August 1) will be due October 1. If you post here, please be considerate and supportive of each other’s feelings, emotions, reactions and the like. Fall Decisions: Offered Admission

Please use this post to ask questions if you have been offered admission.

Congratulations!!! Welcome to UVa!

Please take note that we never promise admission to a particular major.  You have been admitted to the school to which you have applied. Major declaration and planning will occur at orientation and over the summer, and sometimes into the fall semester for rising third years.  For rising second-years, you have plenty of time to declare.

For those of you who applied to Architecture or McIntire, watch out for information on required summer courses (in your offer letter for Architecture and over email for McIntire).
  

Your $400 admissions deposit can be paid online.  This goes towards your first semester’s tuition. Below your online “letter,” you should see buttons to accept or decline our offer of admission.  Clicking “YES” will not completely secure your spot in the class.  You will need to pay your $400 deposit to set it in stone.  You can pay with a credit card (we do not accept VISA) or with an e-check.  As specified in the letter, you will have until May 15^th to put down a deposit.

Financial aid information will start to go out next week, if your financial aid has been reviewed.

You should keep a close eye on your to-do list in the event that Student Financial Services needs more information from you. 

As far as the next steps go, 72 hours after you deposit, you should be able to take UVA’s responsible computing quiz, officially set up your email account and look into orientation. Housing and dining information will take a couple of weeks to come.   It is so important to keep an eye on both your old and new email addresses.  EVERYTHING happens on email.  Don’t miss important deadlines by ignoring these accounts. Hopefully, the email address you put on your application is the one you check most often. Your academic credit will not be evaluated until you pay your deposit and send in your final transcript. This evaluation is ongoing until summer orientation.   If you’re curious about what might transfer, check out our transfer credit analyzer.  Generally, you will not sign up for classes until orientation.  Specialty schools may reach out and tell you you can register at an earlier date, but this won't happen to until late Jane at the earliest.

If you decide not to come to UVA, please be sure to decline the offer using the other button-- the "NO" button. We and our wait listed students would really appreciate you taking the time to do this.

Lastly, keep up the good work and good grades!  We’ve admitted because you have shown us you can perform well in college-level coursework. You’ve come this far.  Let’s keep it up!   Feel free to come back to the blog for moral support during that final exams.

Pass/Fail Transfer Credit from Spring 2020 Semester

We just received the official announcement from Academic Affairs with the details of awarding credit and transferring in coursework that has been switched to Pass/Fail grading this semester. This is for all of our undergraduate colleges:

When evaluating external credit for transfer to UVA, UVA will use the following criteria for courses taken during Spring 2020. These criteria will be used to evaluate courses normally accepted for credit at UVA:

Pass/Fail, CR/NC, S/U Grading Options Implemented Expressly for Spring 2020 in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic:

If the institution's Spring 2020 COVID-19 grading policy is limited to two grades (e.g., Pass/Fail, CR/NC, etc):

·        Courses receiving P/CR will be accepted for full credit.

·        Courses normally considered equivalent to a UVA course that receive a P/CR will meet all prerequisite and degree requirements normally met by that equivalency.

If the institution's Spring 2020 COVID-19 grading policy includes an additional grade to distinguish passing grades below C (e.g., P+/P-/W):

·        Courses receiving the lower passing grade will be accepted as generic transfer credit but will not fulfill prerequisites or degree requirements beyond total number of credits required for a degree.

·        Courses receiving the lower passing grade will be assigned a generic course identifier (e.g., BIOL 1000T).

Standard Grades Earned During Spring 2020

Grades Higher Than C:

·        Courses will be accepted for full credit.

·        Courses normally considered equivalent to a UVA course will meet all prerequisite and degree requirements normally met by that equivalency.

Grades C- through D-:

Hello Everyone,

In response to the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, the University has made the decision to cancel information sessions and tours until further notice. This decision was made by University leadership after consulting with leading medical experts. It is our hope that these efforts and this decision will best protect the health of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors and assist in slowing the spread of the virus. 

For the time being, the Office of Admission will not be meeting with visitors in person but our admission deans are available to talk by phone or email if you have questions, and we will be providing updates on social media and on our institutional coronavirus webpage.

A Reminder: High School Transcripts are Required

Often many applicants are surprised that we require a high school transcript, or a GED score report from our transfers. This is an important part of application review and yes, it's required for everyone, no matter how old you are, or how long you have been in school!

This also goes for international students and students who finished high school abroad. This can present difficulties for these students.  Please make sure to consult with your school or school district to have these documents sent to us. If your transcript need translating, you will want to work on this as soon as possible. Most of our applicants use WES for their translation service.  We don't need the evaluation, only the translation. Some international schools do not provide transcripts, but rather summaries or test results from secondary education.  We will take those documents as well.

We tend to look closer at the high school records of rising second-years, because after all, that was less than a year ago for most applicants.  While we require them for any applicant, typically the longer you have been away from high school, the less closely we'll look at that record.

Spring Semester Coursework

As we begin to look at the spring semester - if you're intending to apply for fall transfer, keep in mind our transfer course requirements as you double check your spring registration. As you may already know, these course requirements are the foundation of a successful transfer application and ensure that you'll have a smooth transition to your degree progress at UVa.

One helpful tool for the transfer course requirements is the credit analyzer - found here. As many previous enrolling students have taken courses you may have taken, you can see how those courses have transferred in. However, please know that the list isn't exhaustive - meaning it's entirely possible that courses you have taken may not be listed on it, but still be transferable when you enroll at UVa. Use your judgement to select courses at your institution that fit into the recommended subjects.

Taking the appropriate courses and earning strong grades are the most important aspects of file review. Now, back to those transfer course requirements. Once you click through to each school -- the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Architecture, etc. -- you'll see a list of exactly what you need to take.  Follow this closely, but it's highly recommended that you look to see what UVA students are taking their first two years as well.  It may be wise to take an additional math course if that's what Psychology or Biology is looking for. Some departments have done a great job of speaking directly to transfers on their pages.  Here are some examples -economics, psychology, and media studies. Some give curriculum guides like chemistry and mechanical engineering.  A quick google search will give you information on curricula all over the University.  Our best applicants have planned out their schedules using this information and it shows on transcripts.
